About Professor Sutapa Mukherjee

Professor Sutapa Mukherjee MB BS, FRACP, PhD, is an experienced Respiratory and Sleep Physician in Adelaide. She completed her medical degree at the University of Adelaide and specialist training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Professor Mukherjee has worked at leading centres in Australia, the United States, and Canada, including Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and holds a PhD from the University of Western Australia for her research on gene therapy for lung cancer. She is Professor of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Flinders University.

Professor Mukherjee’s clinical interests include:

  • All aspects of sleep health, including sleep apnoea, hypersomnolence, restless legs syndrome and insomnia

  • Multidisciplinary care for patients with complex or overlapping respiratory and sleep conditions

​

Professor Mukherjee is internationally recognised for her research into sleep and respiratory medicine. She has published more than 100 papers on topics such as sleep apnoea, genetics, COPD and lung health, and her work has received over 9,000 citations globally. She continues to lead major research projects, contributes to Australian and international clinical guidelines and is active in the Australasian Sleep Association and the World Sleep Society. She regularly teaches and mentors medical students, registrars, and allied health professionals. She was the co-host of Australia's Sleep Revolution with Michael Mosley, which aired on SBS in 2024 and has won many national and international awards.​
